So this is what it has come to...News-feeds via independent journalists.
In the old days people read the newspaper, then listened to the radio, the watched TV, then read some news websites. All these mediums had at least one thing in common; the content was produced by a professional news organization. This assured at least a couple of other "things" 1) the news was usually verified and; 2) the production of the news was filtered by the publisher because their revenue was derived through advertising.
Enter social media and a world where everyone can be a content-creating-publisher with the broadest network ever known to man. So not only can we all create content (this Blog for example), but now we all also have the ability to broadcast that content to a huge audience and across multiple receiving devices.
Case in point was today. I'm heads-down at work. No radio, no websites. I'm working the phones, connecting with employees, partners, customers and prospects. In the background of my two-screen desktop setup, I have my twhirl application running in the background.
twhirl gives me a running feed of information from my Twitter network. This was where I first notice a feed alert about today's USAir plane crash into the Hudson River in NYC. Click on a couple of links and I'm watching streaming video of the live event!
So my network of Twitter contacts now brings me the news and that news ranges from current events to politics to business to software and beyond.
